In the first match of the Stanley Cup playoffs' first round, the Edmonton Oilers played against the Los Angeles Kings at their home arena.

The Oilers secured a convincing victory with a score of 7:4. One of the standout performers of the match was Hyman, who scored a hat-trick, but the spotlight fell on captain Connor McDavid for his remarkable achievement. The Canadian hockey player provided five assists, a feat not seen since 1998, marking a first in his career. Additionally, McDavid became the fourth player in Stanley Cup history to record five assists in the first game of a playoff series. This accomplishment was previously achieved by Stan Mikita (1973), Jeff Kortnall (1998), and Wayne Gretzky (1981).

Furthermore, McDavid became the first player in the 21st century to tally 100 assists in an NHL regular season. The last player to achieve this feat was Wayne Gretzky in 1991.

Additionally, over the course of two days, six matches took place in the Stanley Cup playoffs. In all matches, the home teams emerged victorious. Thus, in the six initial matches, there were six home victories. This statistic is historic, as it hadn't occurred since 1970.
