Nigerian Tunde Onakoya has set a new world record for the longest chess game, lasting 60 hours. The Washington Post reports that he surpassed the previous record by 4 hours.

Onakoya played against the reigning US chess champion, Sean Martinez. He initially expected the game to last only 58 hours but continued until early Saturday morning, April 20, reaching the 60-hour mark. Onakoya and his opponent had only five minutes of break for each hour of play.

Thus, they exceeded the previous record set in 2018 by Hallvard Haug Flåtebo and Syver Förkingstad of Norway, whose game lasted 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds. However, Guinness World Records has not yet confirmed Onakoya's record, as this process could take weeks.

Onakoya aimed to raise one million dollars for the Chess in Slums Africa charity fund to support children's education across Africa. In the first 20 hours of the marathon, he managed to raise $22,000. It is unknown whether he reached the intended fundraising goal.
