The general manager of the Arizona Coyotes, Bill Armstrong, flew to Edmonton to announce to his players the potential relocation of the team to the neighboring state of Utah, specifically to the city of Salt Lake City. This occurred prior to his team's match against the Oilers, which the visitors won in overtime 3-2, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Arizona Coyotes are already guaranteed not to participate in the NHL playoffs of the current season, and the players, along with the staff and officials of the club, will be able to visit Salt Lake City as early as next week. It is expected that the team will arrive in Utah after the final match of the season against the Edmonton Oilers on the night of Thursday, April 18th.

This news emerged amid rumors that Ryan Smith, owner of the NBA team Utah Jazz, is working on acquiring the Coyotes.

Earlier this week, Smith launched a poll with possible names for the team in Salt Lake City. Meanwhile, in the NHL, two different schedule projects for the 2024/25 season are being developed, depending on whether the team will play in Arizona or Utah.

This potential move for Arizona could mark the third relocation in its history. Initially, the club was based in Canada, in Winnipeg, where it was founded in 1972. In 1996, the team moved to Arizona, the city of Phoenix, and was known as the Phoenix Coyotes, and after relocating to Tempe in 2014, the team adopted its current name.
