The opening round match of the Africa Cup of Nations between Benin and DR Congo was rocked by a major refereeing controversy.
Details: In the 55th minute, Benin had a strong case for a penalty after DR Congo defender Chancel Mbemba handled the ball inside the box. The referee headed to the monitor to consult the VAR system, but at that crucial moment, it turned out that the video assistant referee was out of order. Due to this technical malfunction, the officials were unable to review the incident.
As a result, no penalty was awarded to Benin against DR Congo.
It's worth noting that DR Congo edged Benin with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Reminder: Benin matched Mozambique’s unwanted record at the Africa Cup of Nations.
