One of the most beloved strikers of the Premier League era is officially back in English football, and his destination is a surprise even for the transfer obsessives.
Details: Michail Antonio has signed for Championship side Watford on a free transfer. The 36-year-old forward, West Ham's all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, returns to English football after a short spell in Qatar with Al-Sailiya.
Few careers have swung between ecstasy and horror quite like Antonio's. The Jamaica international became a Hammers immortal in August 2021, breaking the club's Premier League scoring record against Leicester City, and finished his West Ham chapter with 68 top flight goals in 323 appearances. Then came December 2024: a horrific car crash after a match against Leicester left him with injuries that endangered both his career and his life. Antonio fought his way back, but West Ham, eventually relegated from the Premier League in May 2026 after 14 years in the top flight, let his contract run down, and the club legend departed as a free agent. A two month adventure with Al-Sailiya in Qatar followed, but England kept calling. Now Watford, a fellow Championship club pushing for stability at Vicarage Road, have handed him the stage for one more act. If his famous physicality and big game instinct survive the mileage, the Hornets may have pulled off the signing of the Championship season, and a reunion with West Ham in the league this term is suddenly must watch football.
It's worth noting that Antonio once scored four goals in a single Premier League match, a 4:0 win over Norwich City in July 2020, and remains the only West Ham player this century to hit 60 league goals for the club.
