Tragic news.
Details: As reported by L'Équipe, the outstanding French coach Jean-Louis Gasset has passed away at the age of 71.
It is reported that he died this morning.
Gasset began his managerial career back in 1991, taking charge of Montpellier for the first time. He later served as an assistant coach for several top European clubs, including a notable partnership with Laurent Blanc for the French national team.
In January 2017, Gasset returned to his beloved Montpellier as head coach, but was dismissed after a few months. In December 2017, he took over at Saint-Étienne, where he remained until 2019. Afterwards, his coaching journey took him to Bordeaux, Marseille, and once again to Montpellier, where he tried to save the club from relegation in Ligue 1, though unfortunately without success.
In May 2022, Gasset was appointed head coach of Côte d'Ivoire, guiding the team to qualification for AFCON 2024. However, he was dismissed during the group stage due to disappointing results. Ironically, the Ivorians managed to progress from the group and ultimately went on to win the tournament.
French football is in mourning. This is an irreplaceable loss for every club fortunate enough to have worked with Jean-Louis Gasset.
