Concerns are mounting over Lionel Mpasi, who was carried off on a stretcher during the Ligue 1 match against Brest

The Congolese goalkeeper for Le Havre AC suffered a serious injury on Saturday during his team’s match against Brest, sparking serious concern just a few weeks before the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

A starter at the kick-off, Lionel Mpasi had to leave the pitch on a stretcher in stoppage time. The DR Congo international goalkeeper suffered an injury whose severity is a cause for concern.

Speaking after the match, Le Havre AC head coach Didier Digard made no secret of his concern. “It doesn’t look good. He’s likely to be out for a long time. We’ll have to wait for the scans, but yes, apparently it’s the Achilles tendon.”

This injury comes at a bad time for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is preparing to play the first two fixtures of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Sébastien Desabre will probably have to manage without his first-choice goalkeeper.

The DRC and Le Havre are now awaiting the results of medical tests to determine the extent of the injury and how long Mpasi will be out of action.
