To achieve big ambitions, significant resources are required.
Details: On the eve of tomorrow's Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle, Manchester City's 55-year-old head coach Pep Guardiola launched a scathing critique at the club's hierarchy for their lack of financial activity in the transfer market.
Guardiola believes that the funds allocated for transfers should be much higher given the objectives set by the club's leadership:
"I'm a bit upset and disappointed because in terms of net spend over the last five years, City ranks only seventh in the Premier League.
I want us to be first. I don't understand why the club doesn't spend more money.
In the past, we won because we spent a lot, and now six teams are supposed to win the Premier League, the Champions League, and the FA Cup because they've spent more over the last five years. These are the facts. Good luck to those six teams who are ahead of us in net spend over the last five years, go ahead! I'm waiting." Guardiola stated.
During the summer transfer window, Manchester City managed to sign Donnarumma, James Trafford, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Tijjani Reijnders, while in the winter window, the Citizens added Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. In total, this season Manchester City has spent €301 million on transfers, including both the summer and winter windows, but according to Pep, even this is not enough.
Reminder: A transparent hint. Guardiola comments on Guehi's controversial own goal
