Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, currently on loan at Belgian club Genk, recounted a frightening experience of getting stuck in an elevator with five teammates, reports The Sun.
The incident occurred during Genk's winter training camp in Spain. Penders explained that he and five other teammates entered an elevator designed to hold up to eight people. However, after the doors closed, the elevator moved only briefly before stopping abruptly.
At first, the players laughed off the situation, but as time passed, their concerns grew. The possibility of running out of air became a real fear.
“But the banter dried up once it became clear that we could not get the doors to open. It became warmer and warmer inside the lift, and we could feel our oxygen supplies running out. It made us think about what could happen,” Penders shared.
Eventually, they used their phones to contact club staff, and after approximately 45 minutes, they were freed from the cramped space.
Penders joined Chelsea for £17 million and signed a contract with the English club lasting until 2032.
