Germany, Sportpark Krieschow

On Sunday, August 23, 2026, the first round of the German Cup will feature one of the most lopsided matchups of the stage. Fifth-division side Krieschow will host Bundesliga club Mainz. The showdown is set for Sportpark Krieschow, kicking off at 15:30 local time. For the hosts, this marks their first-ever appearance in the main draw of the DFB-Pokal, while Urs Fischer’s team will be playing their first official match of the new season.

Krieschow: A historic match amid a rough start to the season

For this small club, simply reaching the main draw of the German Cup is already a massive achievement, so there will be no shortage of motivation for the hosts. However, the season’s opening matches have highlighted just how tough things are for Krieschow, even at their familiar Oberliga level.

The team suffered defeats in both opening rounds. First came a 1-3 loss to Union Sandersdorf, then on August 16, Krieschow fell at home to Meuselwitz, 0-1. In the second match, the hosts were reduced to ten men as early as the 27th minute after Viktor Habermann was sent off, yet they held out defensively for a long time and conceded the only goal deep into stoppage time, at 90+2 minutes. After two rounds, Krieschow has zero points and a goal difference of 1:4.

Krieschow is also facing issues in the goalkeeper position. Sebastian Mellack suffered a serious knee injury and is out long-term, prompting the club to sign 23-year-old Justin Fitz. The newcomer was between the posts for the match against Meuselwitz.

The Meuselwitz game showed that Krieschow can dig in and defend compactly, even when down a man. But against Mainz, the home side will have to contend with a completely different pace, pressing intensity, and quality of individual play.

Mainz: Seven wins in eight friendlies and two double-digit routs

Mainz enjoyed an almost flawless preseason. Urs Fischer's squad recorded seven wins and a draw in eight friendlies. Their final dress rehearsal before the German Cup came on August 15 against Bournemouth, ending in a 2-1 victory, with goals from Sheraldo Becker and William Bøving.

What’s especially telling for this prediction is how Mainz performed against lower-division opponents during the summer. In early July, they demolished Pfeddersheim 11-0, and then fired ten unanswered goals past Eisbachthal — 10-0. Of course, friendlies can’t be directly compared to DFB-Pokal fixtures, but these results clearly show Fischer’s approach to games against far weaker sides: Mainz don’t let up after a couple of goals and keep creating chances relentlessly.

In the Bournemouth match, the starting lineup featured Zentner, Caci, da Costa, Gruber, Kohr, Mwene, Sano, Amiri, Lee Jae-sung, Becker, and Titz. Fischer went for heavy rotation in the second half, with Bøving coming off the bench to net the winner—further underlining the visitors’ squad depth.

Mainz will definitely be without Paul Nebel. The midfielder picked up an adductor injury, and the club has confirmed he’ll be sidelined for several weeks. Still, for a clash with a fifth-tier opponent, Fischer has plenty of attacking options even in Nebel’s absence.

Why a big handicap is the way to go

Krieschow is about to play the biggest match in its history, and the magic of a cup tie always leaves room for surprises. Plus, Fischer may rotate his squad ahead of the Bundesliga opener.

However, too many factors point toward a comfortable win for the favorite. Krieschow has lost both opening league matches, scored just once, was forced to change its starting goalkeeper, and now faces an opponent operating several levels higher. Mainz, meanwhile, is unbeaten in eight preseason games and has already demonstrated twice this summer just how ruthless they can be when there’s a gulf in class—11-0 and 10-0.

The huge gap in pace and quality should result in a blowout: Prediction for Krieschow vs Mainz

The real question here isn’t whether Mainz will win, but by how much. The hosts will surely start as cautiously as possible and try to make this the biggest footballing event in their club’s history, but withstanding Bundesliga-level pressure for 90 minutes will be a monumental challenge.

Mainz has the depth to maintain a high tempo even after making substitutions, and their summer results against lower-division teams show Fischer’s men aren’t content to just sit on a comfortable lead. If the favorite scores early, this could turn into a one-way contest.

Prediction: Mainz with a -3.5 handicap.
