Can Riga's European discipline survive the trip to Cyprus? Pafos vs Riga prediction – 22.10.2026
Pafos and Riga FC will meet on Thursday, October 22, in the second round of the UEFA Conference League league phase. The match will take place at Alphamega Stadium and kick off at 19:45 local time. The Cypriot side are looking for their first points after a difficult opening night in Bergamo, while Riga already have a point on the board following their home draw against Kairat Almaty.
Pafos: a response is required after the setback in Bergamo
Ricardo Sá Pinto's team entered the league phase in decent domestic form. Pafos have collected ten points from their opening five league matches, winning three, drawing one and losing one, with a 7-3 goal difference. Their most recent completed domestic fixture brought a convincing 3-1 away victory over Anorthosis, with Lelê scoring twice during an excellent second-half comeback.
The Conference League opener was considerably tougher. Pafos lost 3-1 away to Atalanta after conceding three times before the interval, although Biel's late goal at least provided some encouragement. The Cypriots were able to create several dangerous situations against a much stronger opponent, but their defensive structure was exposed whenever Atalanta accelerated the tempo.
Personnel is another important issue. David Goldar and Nicolas Ngamaleu did not travel to Bergamo because of fitness problems, while David Luiz was forced off in the 37th minute against Atalanta after suffering discomfort in his hamstring. His condition therefore remains one of the key questions ahead of Thursday's match.
Even with those concerns, Sá Pinto still has plenty of attacking options. Biel, Lelê, Domingos Quina, Vlad Dragomir, Pêpê, Ivan Šunjić, Ken Sema and João Correia give Pafos enough technical quality to control the ball and attack in different ways. At home, they should be considerably more proactive than they were against Atalanta.
Riga: unbeaten in the Conference League and difficult to break down
Riga's European campaign deserves considerable respect. Adrián Guľa's team came through all three qualifying rounds without losing a Conference League match: they eliminated Vardar, Győr and KÍ Klaksvík before opening the league phase with a 1-1 draw against Kairat. Across seven Conference League matches this season, Riga remain unbeaten.
Their opening league-phase game demonstrated exactly why they are uncomfortable opponents. Riga conceded an early penalty against Kairat but responded almost immediately through Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand and then kept the match under control well enough to earn a point. Guľa used a compact 4-2-3-1 with Kenan Pirić in goal and Muhammed Badamosi leading the attack, while Oulad M'Hand and Raki Aouani provided support from advanced positions.
Domestically, Riga are also enjoying an excellent season. They currently lead the Latvian Virslīga with 80 points from 32 matches, having recorded 25 victories and only two defeats. Guľa has made no secret of the club's ambition in Europe either, describing the six league-phase fixtures as six finals and insisting that Riga intend to fight for a result in every one of them.
The tactical battle should suit Riga more than the market suggests
Pafos are understandably favorites. They have more individual experience at this level and will be expected to dominate possession in Cyprus. After losing their opening match, there is also additional pressure on Sá Pinto's team to take three points.
However, Riga have already shown that they are comfortable without controlling the game. Their away performances in qualifying included a 3-2 victory at Vardar, a 1-1 draw against Győr and a goalless draw in Klaksvík. Guľa's side defend compactly, are patient in transition and rarely allow opponents to turn matches into one-way traffic.
Pafos should create more chances, but their defensive personnel problems and Riga's consistency make a comfortable home victory far from guaranteed. The Latvians have enough physical strength and counterattacking quality to stay competitive deep into the second half, and even a narrow one-goal defeat would fit the expected balance of the contest.
Riga can keep the margin under control
Pafos are the stronger team on paper and the most likely winners, but the difference between these sides does not look large enough to justify expecting a one-sided result. Riga have not lost any of their seven Conference League matches this season and have already proved they can handle difficult European trips.
The hosts should spend more time on the ball, but Riga's compact defensive structure and Pafos's uncertainty at centre-back point toward a much closer contest than the outright prices suggest. Giving the visitors a sizeable Asian handicap therefore looks like the most attractive option.
Prediction: Riga FC Asian handicap (+1).
