The tragic circumstances surrounding Hyron Andrews’ sudden death now have an official medical explanation.

Details: The Lions Rugby Company, speaking on behalf of the Andrews family, confirmed that an autopsy carried out by French authorities found that the 31-year-old lock died from an aortic dissection. According to the official findings, the dissection most likely occurred on an existing aortic aneurysm.

French authorities described the cause of death as a tear in the aorta from natural causes, which led to a significant accumulation of blood inside the sac surrounding the heart. The findings provide the first definitive medical explanation for the rugby player’s sudden death in France.

Andrews died on October 16 while the Lions were in France preparing for their Investec Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. The fixture went ahead the following day in his honour, with the South African side losing 31-14. The Andrews family has asked for privacy, respect and patience while arrangements are made to repatriate his body to South Africa. No specific timeline for his return has yet been confirmed.

It’s worth noting that Andrews previously represented South Africa at under-20 level and spent much of his professional career with the Sharks before moving to England. Sale Sharks confirmed that the second-row forward made 45 appearances for the club after initially joining as injury cover during the 2023/24 season. He remained there for two further campaigns before returning to South Africa to join the Lions after the 2025/26 season.
