Can Hearts punish Trabzonspor’s defensive vulnerability? Prediction for Trabzonspor vs Hearts – 22.10.2026
Trabzonspor and Hearts meet in the second round of the UEFA Conference League league phase on Thursday, October 22. The Turkish side made an explosive start to their European campaign with a 4-2 away victory over KuPS, while Hearts were forced to settle for a 1-1 home draw against Nordsjælland despite creating enough chances to take all three points.
Trabzonspor: Reis has quickly added attacking momentum
Trabzonspor have become much more dangerous going forward under Thomas Reis. Their European opener illustrated both the strengths and weaknesses of the current team: the Turkish club scored four times in Finland, but KuPS still managed to create problems and find the net twice.
Paul Onuachu opened the scoring after only three minutes against KuPS but was forced off through injury shortly afterwards. His condition is therefore one of the main questions ahead of the Hearts clash. If the Nigerian striker is unavailable, Franculino is the obvious candidate to lead the attack after coming off the bench and scoring twice in Finland.
Mohamed Salah also found the net in that 4-2 victory, while Benjamin Bouchouari, Ozan Tufan and Aral Şimşir give Reis several ways to progress the ball quickly into the final third. Trabzonspor should spend long periods in possession at home and are likely to press Hearts aggressively from the opening minutes.
The concern is at the other end. Even in a match Trabzonspor largely controlled against KuPS, their opponents managed to score twice and repeatedly reach dangerous areas. That makes it difficult to trust the hosts to keep a clean sheet against a Hearts team that is currently creating plenty of chances.
Hearts: Vrancken’s side will not travel just to defend
Hearts began their Conference League campaign with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Nordsjælland. Oisin McEntee put Wouter Vrancken’s team ahead in the first half, and the Scottish side subsequently had several opportunities to double their advantage before conceding a deflected equaliser in the 86th minute.
The performance was more encouraging than the final score. Josh McPake caused constant problems on the left, Calvin Miller was active between the lines, and Claudio Braga and James Wilson both offered attacking options around the penalty area. Hearts had already produced an emphatic 5-0 domestic victory immediately before their European opener, so confidence in the attacking phase remains high.
There are personnel issues, however. Ageu suffered another muscle problem and was removed from the European squad, while Blair Spittal is also unavailable. Against Nordsjælland, McEntee moved into midfield alongside Laurent Mendy and immediately made an impact by scoring.
Trabzon will represent a considerably tougher environment, and Hearts are unlikely to dominate possession. However, Vrancken’s side have enough speed in transition to attack the spaces Trabzonspor leave behind when committing numbers forward.
Probable lineups
- Trabzonspor: Onana; Pina, Akaydin, Mendy, Özkacar; Kabasakal, Tufan; Salah, Bouchouari, Şimşir; Franculino.
- Hearts: Reus; Borchgrevink, Fagan-Walcott, McCart, Milne; Mendy, McEntee; Miller, Braga, McPake; Wilson.
Key trends
- Trabzonspor scored four goals in their opening Conference League match.
- Hearts created seven shots on target against Nordsjælland but scored only once.
- Both teams scored in each club’s opening Conference League fixture.
- Hearts followed a 5-0 domestic win with their 1-1 European draw.
- Franculino scored twice after replacing the injured Onuachu against KuPS.
Both attacks should get their opportunities
Trabzonspor deserve to be favorites at home. Reis has more individual quality at his disposal, and the pace of Salah, Şimşir and Franculino can cause serious problems for a Hearts defence that will be under much more pressure than it was in the opening round.
However, backing the hosts at short prices is less attractive than looking at the goals market. Hearts showed against Nordsjælland that they can create chances in different ways, while Trabzonspor’s 4-2 victory in Finland was another reminder that their aggressive approach can leave spaces at the back.
The hosts should create enough to score, but Hearts have the pace and confidence to punish at least one mistake in transition. An open second half in particular looks very possible if either team has to chase the result.
Prediction: Both teams to score – Yes.
