The former Chelsea and Milan player has made a radical decision.

Details: Today, on his Instagram page, 33-year-old Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel revealed that he has decided to end his professional football career.

The driving force behind such a drastic move were persistent injuries that prevented Van Ginkel from fulfilling his immense potential.

Marco van Ginkel joined Chelsea from Vitesse in 2013 for €9 million, but in just his third match, the midfielder suffered a serious knee injury that sidelined him for the entire 2013/14 season. After recovering, he was unable to regain his previous form and was loaned out to Milan, Stoke City, and PSV. In total, Van Ginkel made only four appearances for Chelsea and did not register a single goal involvement.

Van Ginkel's last club was Portuguese side Boavista, which he left in the summer of 2025 and has been a free agent ever since.
