First penalty miss of the Premier League season! Igor Thiago fails from the spot. VIDEO
Igor Thiago had a perfect opportunity to make his mark in the Premier League opener, but this time the Brazilian failed from the spot.
Details: During Brentford's first-round Premier League clash against Tottenham, the hosts were awarded a penalty and their main striker Igor Thiago stepped up to take responsibility. The Brazilian, however, failed to convert the spot-kick. The episode produced the first missed penalty of the new Premier League campaign, making Thiago the first player in the 2026/27 season to fail from 12 yards.
Thiago entered the new campaign as one of Brentford's biggest attacking threats after an outstanding previous season. The forward was also the Bees' regular penalty taker, so the unsuccessful attempt against Tottenham was an unusual setback for a player who had repeatedly delivered from the spot.
The Brazilian will nevertheless remain a crucial figure in Brentford's attack. His physical strength, finishing and ability to occupy defenders made him one of the Premier League's most dangerous forwards last season, and the club will again rely heavily on his goals in the new campaign.
It is worth noting that Igor Thiago finished the 2025/26 Premier League season with 22 goals in 38 appearances, placing second in the Golden Boot race behind Erling Haaland. Eight of those 22 league goals were scored from the penalty spot.
