Kylian Mbappé is experiencing one of the worst weeks of his career. Not only did he exit the Champions League with Real Madrid, but he also witnessed his owned club Caen being relegated from Ligue 2 — for the first time in 40 years.
A 0-3 loss to Martigues on Friday officially sent the team to the third division of France — National 1. Despite having the worst defense of the season and only five wins, Caen's downfall was a significant blow, especially considering the high expectations following the change of ownership.
Since the Mbappé family, through their company Interconnected Ventures, acquired 80% of the club's shares in September, Caen has rapidly declined. Fans have begun to express dissatisfaction, criticizing the new management for lack of involvement and weak governance. Protest banners appeared at matches, with messages urging more respect for the club and its traditions. One slogan read "Caen is not a toy," reflecting the general disappointment with the situation.
While Caen prepares for its stint in the third division, Mbappé is focused on his performances with Real Madrid. However, he will not play in the upcoming match against Athletic on April 20 due to a suspension following a recent red card.
