In the Champions League playoffs, English side Newcastle United faced an unprecedented logistical challenge.
Details: According to The Athletic, Newcastle's journey to Azerbaijan for their Champions League clash against Qarabag has become the longest trip ever undertaken by an English club in the tournament's history. The Magpies have to cover an astonishing 5,061 miles round trip.
Previously, the record was held by Chelsea, whose trip to face the same Qarabag in the 2017/18 season totaled 4,948 miles. Now, Eddie Howe’s men are not only facing a battle on the pitch, but also a grueling acclimatization after a journey that surpasses even most transatlantic flights in length.
Statistics show that the Azerbaijani club is the most challenging opponent for English teams in terms of geography: the top three longest journeys all involve trips to Baku.
The full ranking is as follows:
It’s worth noting that the match is set to kick off soon, with the start scheduled for 18:45 Central European Time.
Reminder: German forward Nick Woltemade wants to leave Newcastle and return to Germany.
