£190 million statement! Newcastle buy a giant estate to build the world's best training base
Newcastle's owners have just made their loudest statement yet about the club's long-term future.
Details: According to David Ornstein, Newcastle United have reached an agreement on a new £190 million training complex, purchasing the Woolsington Hall estate for elite men's and academy facilities. Subject to planning permission, the Magpies would move in for the 2029/30 season.
The 260-acre estate sits close to Newcastle Airport, just five miles from St James' Park, and includes a derelict listed country house that will be carefully restored alongside brand-new performance facilities. A formal planning application is expected in early 2027, and the master plan also leaves room for bespoke women's and girls' facilities. Club CEO David Hopkinson called it a landmark moment and promised the world's best performance environment.
The investment from owners PIF and RB Sports & Media comes at a turbulent time: the Magpies have sold Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães this summer, appointed Matthias Jaissle as head coach and kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on August 23. It's worth noting that the Woolsington site was first bought back in 1994 by former chairman Sir John Hall, who already dreamed of building an academy there.
Reminder: Newcastle open talks with Manchester City over Nico Gonzalez.
