Newcastle open talks with Manchester City over Nico Gonzalez
Newcastle United have entered talks with Manchester City over a potential transfer for midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
Details: According to David Ornstein, Newcastle are in talks with Manchester City about a possible deal for Gonzalez. The conversations are described as exploratory, and no fee, contract length or medical timetable has been disclosed.
The 24-year-old Spaniard is a defensive midfielder who can also operate higher in central midfield. Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto on deadline day in January 2025 for €60 million and remains under contract until June 2029.
For Newcastle, the interest fits a clear need. The club is looking for midfield reinforcements after Sandro Tonali left for Tottenham and Bruno Guimaraes joined Arsenal. New head coach Matthias Jaissle has already added younger options, but the Magpies still want a more ready-made profile before the Premier League restart.
Gonzalez made 41 appearances for City in 2025/26, yet started only two Premier League matches after January. Earlier this month he said he wanted to stay at the Etihad, and he came off the bench for the final 11 minutes of Sunday's Community Shield defeat by Arsenal. Transfermarkt currently values him at €40 million.
Reminder: Newcastle missed Højbjerg after the Dane refused a move from Marseille.
