Details: According to the Daily Mail, Marseille’s management has stripped the 31-year-old midfielder of the captain’s armband after he turned down a move to Newcastle. In the friendly match against Atlético on August 14, the Dane started, but it was Timothy Weah who led the team out as captain.

It’s reported that Marseille’s owner, Frank McCourt, was particularly displeased with the player’s decision. The French club was ready to let Højbjerg go for around €15 million, and Newcastle were willing to match the financial demands, but the midfielder himself rejected the chance to return to the Premier League.

For Marseille, this refusal proved especially painful amid financial difficulties. The club is looking to raise funds through player sales and reduce its wage bill, so Højbjerg’s decision caused significant frustration within the management.

Højbjerg has been playing for Marseille since the summer of 2024, initially joining on loan from Tottenham before the French club made the deal permanent a year later.

Last season, the Danish midfielder appeared in 43 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing five assists.
