CSKA Sofia: Six European matches already in the tank

The Bulgarian side kicked off their European campaign back on July 9 and have already played six Europa League qualifiers. First, Hristo Yanev’s men overcame Derry City 5-3 on aggregate, then survived two goalless draws with Qarabag before winning the penalty shootout, and in the third round knocked out Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The clash with the Israelis was especially telling. Away from home, CSKA stunned Maccabi with a 3-0 rout, giving themselves a huge cushion for the return leg. In Sofia, the Bulgarians lost 1-3 but held on to win 4-3 on aggregate. Across their six Europa League outings this season, CSKA have scored nine goals and conceded six.
Domestically, they’ve also made a flying start. After five rounds of the Bulgarian championship, CSKA have four wins and one draw, with a goal difference of 13-3. In their last match before heading to Crete, they demolished Botev Vratsa 5-0. This underlines that the visitors are currently much closer to peak physical and tactical condition than OFI.
