On Thursday, August 20, at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, the first leg of the Europa League play-off round will see OFI host CSKA Sofia. For the Greek club, it marks a return to European competition after a long absence, while the Bulgarians have already battled through three qualifying rounds. The winner over two legs will advance to the Europa League group stage, while the loser will continue their season in the Conference League.

OFI: Cup glory secured, but still searching for match sharpness

OFI earned a direct ticket to the Europa League play-off round after lifting last season’s Greek Cup. Unlike their opponents, Christos Kontis's squad did not play any official European matches over the summer and were able to focus calmly on preparing for this decisive qualifying stage.

However, their preseason campaign was far from ideal. In the Netherlands, the Cretans suffered defeats to Go Ahead Eagles (0-4), NAC Breda (2-3), and Willem II (1-2), repeatedly struggling in defense. But the first major test of the new season went much better for OFI: in the Greek Super Cup, they drew 2-2 with AEK and then triumphed 5-4 on penalties. For a side still finding its rhythm, this was a vital psychological boost ahead of their European return.

OFI’s squad boasts plenty of experience. At the back are Dimitris Nikolaou and Achilleas Poungouras, with Thanasis Androutsos and Zisis Karachalios anchoring the midfield, while the main attacking threats should come from Taxiarchis Fountas, Thiago Nuss, and summer signing Aitor Cantalapiedra. As of now, there are no reports of major absences that would force Kontis to radically alter his plans for the match.

CSKA Sofia: Six European matches already in the tank

CSKA’s biggest advantage ahead of the first leg is their vastly superior match sharpness. The Bulgarian side kicked off their European campaign back on July 9 and have already played six Europa League qualifiers. First, Hristo Yanev’s men overcame Derry City 5-3 on aggregate, then survived two goalless draws with Qarabag before winning the penalty shootout, and in the third round knocked out Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The clash with the Israelis was especially telling. Away from home, CSKA stunned Maccabi with a 3-0 rout, giving themselves a huge cushion for the return leg. In Sofia, the Bulgarians lost 1-3 but held on to win 4-3 on aggregate. Across their six Europa League outings this season, CSKA have scored nine goals and conceded six.

Domestically, they’ve also made a flying start. After five rounds of the Bulgarian championship, CSKA have four wins and one draw, with a goal difference of 13-3. In their last match before heading to Crete, they demolished Botev Vratsa 5-0. This underlines that the visitors are currently much closer to peak physical and tactical condition than OFI.

The Bulgarians’ attack deserves special mention. Their European squad features Ioannis Pittas, Leandro Godoy, and Joël Zwarts, with the experienced Stefano Sensi in midfield. Zwarts has hit the ground running in the Bulgarian league and is already among the top scorers after five rounds, giving Yanev real options up front.

Probable line-ups

  • OFI: Christogeorgos — Kostoulas, Sielis, Poungouras — Apostolakis, Karachalios, Androutsos, Athanasiou — Fountas, Cantalapiedra, Nuss.
  • CSKA Sofia: Lapoukhov — Teodor Ivanov, Gbamin, Facundo Rodriguez — Pastor, Ebong, Eto'o, Sensi, Yordanov — Pittas, Godoy.

The starting line-ups will be confirmed only on matchday. Joël Zwarts is also a strong contender for a starting spot after his electric start to the Bulgarian league campaign.

Match facts

  • OFI and CSKA Sofia have never previously met in official competition.
  • CSKA have played three away matches in this Europa League qualifying campaign: beating Derry City 2-1, drawing 0-0 with Qarabag, and thrashing Maccabi Tel Aviv 3-0.
  • In two of those three European away fixtures, the Bulgarian side kept a clean sheet.
  • OFI conceded at least twice in all three summer friendlies in the Netherlands, and their first official match of the season against AEK ended 2-2.
  • CSKA started the Bulgarian league unbeaten — four wins and one draw from five rounds.

The first leg will see cautious risks: OFI vs CSKA Sofia prediction

In terms of overall form and current match fitness, CSKA hold the advantage. The Bulgarians have already negotiated three very different European ties, know how to get results away from home, and have kept clean sheets in two of their three qualifying trips. OFI, by contrast, have played just one official fixture this season.

However, backing the visitors for a straight win looks risky. The Cretans are riding high emotionally after their Super Cup triumph and will be determined above all not to lose the first leg at home. For CSKA, there’s also no need to turn the match into an all-out shootout: the return game in Sofia is just a week away, so a draw would be an acceptable result for Yanev’s men.

OFI’s summer matches were high-scoring, and CSKA just hammered in five goals in their last league outing, but the nature of a first European play-off leg usually leads to a slower tempo and fewer risky decisions. The Bulgarians already showed against Qarabag that they can play patiently and pragmatically for long stretches, while OFI, after their defensive troubles in preseason, are unlikely to allow their opponents too much space.

At the time of writing, the market offers around 1.75 for under 2.5 total goals. Given the expected caution in the first leg, CSKA’s solid away organization, and OFI’s lack of official match rhythm, this looks a more appealing option than betting on the outcome.
