Hollywood club lose their hero! Okonkwo leaves Wrexham for a Championship rival
One of the heroes of Wrexham's fairytale rise is packing his bags.
Details: According to Fabrizio Romano, Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal to sign Arthur Okonkwo on a season-long loan from Wrexham. With just one year left on his contract, the Nigeria international is set to become a free agent next summer.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper lost his place after Wrexham broke their transfer record to bring in Anthony Patterson as the new number one, and the Red Dragons made it clear he was free to go. Charlton moved fastest despite interest from Bolton, Derby and Leicester, with Okonkwo keen to stay in the Championship to protect his spot in the Super Eagles squad.
Okonkwo joined Arsenal's academy at the age of eight and tasted success on loan at Sturm Graz, winning the Austrian Cup in 2023, before becoming a fan favourite at Wrexham: he played a key role in back-to-back promotions from League Two and League One, racking up 108 league appearances over the last three seasons. It's worth noting that he switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria only this year and has already earned two caps.
Reminder: Boom! Arsenal snatch England star in €58m deal.
