The end of the era of minor fouls! UEFA wields the axe over VAR interference in football

A revolution in European refereeing is becoming reality.

Details: UEFA has officially launched a new methodological platform called Clear Line, designed to fully standardize refereeing across the continent. The main aim of the initiative is to drastically reduce the involvement of video assistant referees in the flow of matches. From now on, VAR specialists will only intervene in cases of clear and obvious errors by the head referee, permanently abandoning the detailed review of minor incidents.

Clear Line is UEFA’s public video library on refereeing. It provides open access to official recommendations and instructions that the organization gives to referees and VAR specialists, ensuring uniform application of the Laws of the Game throughout Europe.

The central figure on the pitch should once again be the head referee. This move by European football’s leadership directly contradicts FIFA’s stricter, more detailed approach, as demonstrated at the last World Cup.

It’s worth noting that the VAR system was first officially introduced by UEFA at the Champions League knockout stage in 2019, and has since spread to all international tournaments under the organization’s umbrella.
