Details: According to the British outlet talkSPORT, UEFA’s top brass, led by president Aleksander Čeferin and European Club Association chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, are seriously determined to force Gianni Infantino out of his role as FIFA president.

The tipping point in their deteriorating relationship was FIFA’s failed commercial venture to attract private investment and sell stakes in its tournaments, which sparked a wave of discontent and accusations of unilateral decision-making.

If Infantino refuses to resign voluntarily or withdraw his candidacy before the March elections, Aleksander Čeferin is prepared to launch an official vote of no confidence. The emergency procedure requires support from 20% of the national associations (43 votes out of 211), a threshold UEFA with its 55 member federations can reach on its own. To ultimately remove the FIFA president at an extraordinary congress, only a simple majority—106 votes—would be needed.

Potential successors or alternative candidates for the top job in world football include CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani and Asian Football Confederation boss Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa. Behind the scenes, Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s name has also been mentioned, but the Qatari executive has stressed he is completely happy in his role at Paris Saint-Germain. Additionally, European football circles are discussing a fundamental reform of FIFA’s leadership—either switching to a rotational presidency or replacing the sole president with an elected committee chairperson.
