One of the most anticipated matches of the European football season, El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, is fast approaching. Today, the name of the referee assigned to oversee this clash of eternal rivals has been revealed.
Details: According to El Chiringuito, La Liga has appointed 41-year-old José María Sánchez Martínez to officiate the match. The experienced referee is no stranger to El Clásico; this will be his third encounter with the iconic fixture in La Liga.
In the 2022/23 season, he officiated the match at the Santiago Bernabéu, which ended in a 3-1 victory for Los Blancos. The season before, he was in charge of the game at Camp Nou, where Real Madrid also emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline.
Additionally, Sánchez Martínez refereed the El Clásico during the 2017/18 Spanish Super Cup, where Real Madrid triumphed 2-0.
This season, the referee has yet to officiate a Real Madrid match, but he oversaw Barcelona's 2-1 victory against Valencia in the opening round of La Liga.
Reminder: The match between Real Madrid and Barcelona will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, October 26. Barcelona currently tops the La Liga standings, three points ahead of Real Madrid.
