In Iñaki's view, this move destroys traditions by putting money ahead of football.
Details: The 31-year-old Athletic Bilbao captain Iñaki Williams has harshly criticized the Spanish Football Federation's idea to stage the Spanish Super Cup semifinals and final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Williams believes this decision only complicates the matches and brings about additional problems and inconveniences:
"Playing in Saudi Arabia is crap, to put it plainly. It doesn't make life easier for the fans. In essence, we're playing away from home again. If the matches were held here, thousands of our supporters would travel with us," said Iñaki.
This decision also puts Iñaki Williams in a particularly difficult position, as he is about to become a father any day now, and because the matches are in Saudi Arabia, he will have to leave his newborn child and wife behind:
"I'm going to have to leave, leaving my wife and newborn behind. It's not easy, but that's the price of the profession."
The Spanish Super Cup semifinal between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona will take place on January 7 in Saudi Arabia. The winner will play in the final on January 11 against the winner of Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid.
