Eintracht Frankfurt have announced the appointment of their new head coach.
Details: The role goes to 43-year-old Spanish tactician Albert Riera, who has signed a contract running until June 30, 2028. The former Spain international and ex-Liverpool and Manchester City player will take up his duties on Monday, February 2.
Riera moves to Germany after an impressive spell with Slovenian side Celje, whom he led to cup glory and left at the top of the league this season, 12 points clear. Previously, he secured a historic domestic double with Olimpija Ljubljana and also gained experience with French club Bordeaux.
Eintracht sporting director Markus Krösche commented:
“Albert impressed us with his deep footballing knowledge and commitment to an attacking style. We've been following his progress for some time and are convinced he is exactly what the club needs right now.”
Riera will be joined in Frankfurt by his assistants from Celje – Pablo Remon Arteta and Lorenzo Dolcetti. He will have his farewell match in Slovenia against Maribor on Sunday, before immediately flying out to Frankfurt. The official presentation of the new head coach is scheduled for early next week.
It's worth noting that Eintracht currently sit eighth in the Bundesliga and are in the midst of a seven-match winless streak across all competitions. Riera faces an urgent task to turn things around.
Reminder: Liverpool are planning to sign Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise.
