The match between Real Madrid and Betis (1-1) has landed at the heart of a heated refereeing controversy. Real Madrid’s official club channel delivered a scathing critique of referee Soto Grado and VAR, led by Gonzalez Fuertes, following a contentious handball incident in the penalty area.
The pivotal moment unfolded in the second half when Brahim Diaz fired a shot on goal, only for Betis defender Ricardo Rodriguez to block the ball with his hand. However, the match referee saw no infringement, ruling that the defender’s hand was close to his body. VAR chose not to intervene either, which further fueled Real Madrid’s frustration.
During the club channel’s broadcast, the refereeing decision was harshly condemned. Commentators labeled the episode as a “clear penalty” and insisted that there could be no other interpretation in this situation.
The controversy reached new heights when commentator Jose Antonio Luque suggested systemic issues with officiating, claiming that such decisions go unpunished and are accompanied by a ‘hand in the wallet’.
