End of an era! Real Madrid star officially retires from international football
German football is saying goodbye to one of its defining figures: Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has officially announced his retirement from the national team.
Details: The 33 year old centre-back published an emotional statement on his social media, confirming that after a period of reflection he is ending his international career to clear the way for the young generation. Rüdiger made his Germany debut back in 2014 and bows out with 86 caps and three goals.
The decision closes a saga that began right after the World Cup, where Germany suffered a painful elimination against Paraguay. In the heat of that disappointment, Rüdiger reportedly told teammates in the dressing room that he was done with the national team, but the arrival of Jürgen Klopp as head coach made him pause and reconsider. After weeks of reflection, the defender has now made the call final, thanking his teammates, the entire coaching staff, with a special mention for Jogi Löw, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann, and of course the fans, above all for the unique atmosphere of the home Euro 2024. Rüdiger was part of the Germany setup for over a decade, winning the 2017 Confederations Cup and becoming one of the leaders of the dressing room, even if the big title at recent tournaments ultimately eluded him.
It's worth noting that Rüdiger stressed a new chapter now begins, in which he will concentrate fully on his club: the defender extended his Real Madrid contract until 2027 back in June and is set to remain a key figure for José Mourinho, whose side have won all three of their opening La Liga matches, including a 4-0 rout of Malaga on Sunday.
