Last night will go down in history as one of the saddest for Morocco.
Details: 26-year-old Real Madrid and Morocco national team winger Brahim Díaz took to social media platform X today to address fans, issuing an apology for the missed penalty at the end of the match.
"My soul is in pain. I dreamed of this title because of all the love you have given me, every message, every show of support that made me feel I wasn't alone. I fought with everything I had, above all with my heart.
Yesterday I failed and I fully accept responsibility. I offer my sincerest apologies.
It will be hard for me to recover, because this wound doesn't heal easily... but I will try. Not for myself, but for everyone who believed in me and for all those who suffered alongside me.
I will keep moving forward until one day I can repay you for all this love and make my Moroccan people proud." Díaz wrote on his Instagram page.
In the 90+7th minute, Morocco were awarded a penalty with the score at 0-0. The responsibility for the decisive spot kick fell to Díaz, who opted for a Panenka. It proved to be a fatal mistake, as Mendy didn't fall for the trick and calmly collected the ball.
Ultimately, Senegal managed to score first in the 94th minute of extra time, sealing their triumph in the tournament.
