CAF Announces Africa Cup of Nations Will Be Held Every Four Years Starting 2028
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed a major change for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that, beginning in 2028, the tournament will be held every four years instead of the traditional two-year cycle.
This decision is part of a wider effort to restructure African football and better align the continent’s competitions with the increasingly packed global football calendar. Since its inception in 1957, AFCON has mostly been held every two years. However, over the past 15 years, the biennial schedule has often conflicted with other international tournaments, causing challenges for players, teams, and organizers alike.
The announcement comes just one day before the 2025 AFCON kicks off in Morocco. The host nation is set to face Comoros tomorrow at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, marking the start of an eagerly anticipated tournament.
