Yesterday, in the second round of the Turkish Süper Lig, Göztepe hosted Fenerbahçe. The visitors took the lead during added time in the first half but conceded a late equalizer in stoppage time of the second half.
What followed on the pitch was pure chaos. Bottles and other objects were thrown onto the field, and fans began storming it. Fenerbahçe's president, Ali Koç, was escorted off the pitch by security, but a fan ran up from behind and pushed him. Koç fell to the ground, and as he was getting up, bottles continued to be hurled at him, with one striking him directly on the head. All these events were caught on camera and quickly circulated online.
This isn't the first instance of violent actions being linked to football. In recent years, numerous similar incidents have occurred in Turkey. One of the more recent examples was when Trabzonspor fans attacked Fenerbahçe players on the pitch.
It’s worth noting that this summer, Fenerbahçe appointed the legendary coach José Mourinho. Under his leadership, the team won their first Süper Lig match against Adana Demirspor (1-0) but also exited the Champions League qualifiers after losing to Lille (2-1 and 1-1).
Such results may have contributed to the frustration and subsequent behavior of the fans, although nothing can justify such actions.
