The whims of the weather have thrown the schedule of the English Football League into disarray. Two Championship matches slated for today, January 4, will not take place on their originally scheduled date.
Referees in Sheffield and Portsmouth conducted pitch inspections and concluded that certain sections of the surface did not meet the requirements for play. Sheffield United noted that overnight temperatures in the city had dropped well below zero.
The weather conditions have also affected other divisions of the Football League. In League One, as many as four matches have been cancelled. The situation is even more severe in League Two, where eight fixtures have been called off due to frozen pitches.
Postponed Football League matches (Sunday, January 4):
- Championship: Sheffield United — Oxford United, Portsmouth — Ipswich Town
- League One: Doncaster — Luton, Rotherham — Mansfield, Port Vale — Barnsley, Stevenage — Leyton Orient
- League Two: Bromley — Oldham, Colchester — Accrington, Harrogate — Swindon, Newport — Tranmere, Notts County — Gillingham, Salford — Shrewsbury, Walsall — Fleetwood, Barrow — Bristol Rovers
