On Monday, February 3, the transfer window closed across all top European leagues, and spending figures are now clear. Manchester City stands out in these rankings.
Details: According to CBS Sports, the English Premier League topped the list of transfer spending, with clubs spending a total of $248 million. Serie A followed in second place with $227 million. Surprisingly, third place in this ranking belongs to a single club—Manchester City. The "Cityzens" spent $214 million in the winter transfer window.
City’s biggest signing was Nico González, for whom they paid $60 million. According to Transfermarkt, City overpaid by $42 million for the player. They also spent $40 million on Khusanov, overpaying by $28 million, while Victor Reyes cost them $23 million above market value. Meanwhile, Marmoush’s transfer saw an overpayment of $15 million.
Earlier today, we reported that La Liga clubs spent only €26 million on transfers throughout January. In fact, the total spending by La Liga clubs this winter was even lower than that of Germany's second division, 2. Bundesliga, which spent €27.6 million.
Reminder: In the final hours of the transfer window, Barcelona president Joan Laporta teased a signing, but the club ultimately did not make any new acquisitions.
