The fan group Ultras Populaire Sud Nice has released an official statement denying allegations of violence on Sunday evening following Nice’s 1-3 defeat to Lorient in Ligue 1’s Matchday 14.
Details: The ultras emphasized in their release that their members did everything possible to de-escalate the situation and that no one present committed any acts of violence against the players.
“The Ultras Populaire Sud Nice association would like to clarify that it was not the initiator of this demonstration, which arose solely from the general dissatisfaction of the team’s supporters with recent results. Some leaders of our association even helped to defuse the situation and disperse the gathering,” the statement said.
It is also noted that none of the group’s members present at the scene witnessed any violent acts or destruction as claimed by the players.
Recall: The incident occurred after around 400 supporters gathered to confront the team in a heated manner over recent results. The fans stormed the team bus carrying the players, leading to a clash in which Terem Moffi and Jérémie Boga were repeatedly struck and spat at.
Following the incident, the club decided to temporarily suspend Moffi and Boga from first team training and matches to stabilize the situation. However, the players themselves have declared they no longer wish to play for Nice.
