The controversy centers on Israel and Palestine.
Details: According to The Athletic, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin have been accused of "aiding war crimes" and "crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territory."
It is reported that several human rights organizations have leveled these accusations against the football chiefs, including:
- Irish Sport for Palestine.
- Scottish Sport for Palestine.
- Just Peace Advocates.
- Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.
- Sport Scholars for Justice in Palestine.
These organizations have submitted an official 120-page complaint to the International Criminal Court prosecutor, presenting evidence of Infantino and Čeferin’s alleged complicity with the Israeli military.
The core argument is that FIFA and UEFA have not suspended Israeli clubs and the national team from their competitions.
The human rights groups have also been joined by a number of Palestinian footballers, clubs, and landowners whose properties are under the control of the Israeli army.
At present, the ICC is reviewing the submitted complaint and will begin investigating the allegations in due course.
