Unai Emery's season opener has turned into a nightmare.

Details: Brighton have produced a stunning opening half-hour against Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium, racing into a 4-0 lead by the 31st minute. The hosts opened the scoring after just eight minutes when Victor Lindelöf put the ball into his own net. Maxim De Cuyper doubled the advantage in the 18th minute after an assist from Georginio Rutter.

The real collapse came around the half-hour mark. Jack Hinshelwood made it 3-0 in the 30th minute, converting Diego Gómez's assist, before striking again only a minute later. Yasin Ayari provided the final pass for Brighton's fourth as Hinshelwood completed an incredible two-minute brace.

Aston Villa simply could not cope with Brighton's pressure. Shortly after the fourth goal, the Seagulls had converted all four of their shots on target, while Emery's team were yet to test Bart Verbruggen. What was supposed to be the beginning of a new Premier League campaign quickly turned into a brutal afternoon for the visitors.

The scoreline is even more remarkable considering Villa's recent record in this fixture. Before today's match, Aston Villa had suffered only one defeat in their previous ten meetings with Brighton.
