Tour blooper! Lindelöf scores the first own goal of the Premier League season. VIDEO
Brighton wrapped up the first half of their Premier League opening match against Aston Villa in truly unexpected fashion, going into the break with a 4-0 lead. One of the main storylines of the match was guest defender Victor Lindelöf, who found himself at the center of a comical own goal as early as the 8th minute.
After a shot from De Kuipier, the ball ricocheted off the post and bounced straight into the Swedish defender. Lindelöf had virtually no chance to dodge the ball—it struck him from point-blank range and deflected off his body into the net.
That’s how Brighton gained the advantage thanks to a truly extraordinary turn of events, with Lindelöf becoming the author of the first own goal of the new Premier League season.
For Aston Villa, the episode was a real blow. The team barely had time to recover from conceding before they found themselves trailing the Seagulls by four goals at halftime.
Lindelöf’s bizarre own goal is sure to be one of the most talked-about moments of the Premier League’s opening weekend. The Swedish defender was the victim of an incredible ricochet, while Brighton seized a golden opportunity to kick off their season with a win.
