The Round of 16 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between England and Mexico could face a delayed kickoff due to adverse weather conditions. According to The Sun, FIFA officials will hold an emergency meeting with local organizers in Mexico City on match day to assess the situation and determine the next steps.
The clash is set to take place at the legendary Azteca Stadium, but meteorologists are forecasting severe thunderstorms and a high probability of lightning strikes in the area around the venue. Current data suggests there is a 90% chance of thunderstorm activity during the game.
Local meteorologists have already advised organizers to be fully prepared for a possible suspension of play. Under FIFA's current safety regulations, the match must be halted immediately if lightning is detected within an eight-mile (approximately 13 kilometers) radius of the stadium.
If the safety protocol is triggered, players and team staff will be directed to the locker rooms, while fans will be advised to shelter within the stadium. The match can only resume once no new lightning strikes are recorded within the designated radius for at least 30 minutes.
