Total war! Europe takes the FIFA president to criminal court
The truce between UEFA and FIFA lasted less than a day.
Details: According to journalist Ben Jacobs, UEFA is preparing to take criminal action against FIFA president Gianni Infantino in Switzerland. A 60-page complaint has also been sent to the U.S. District Court in Florida.
The European governing body accuses Infantino of criminal mismanagement under Article 158 of the Swiss Criminal Code in connection with the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise project, which sought to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. Through the American court, UEFA is demanding the release of documents related to the conception of the project. Remarkably, just yesterday the Europeans dropped their threat to boycott FIFA tournaments after receiving assurances, but made it clear that their opposition to Infantino remains unchanged.
Thus, the battle for the FIFA presidency, where Aleksander Ceferin demands Infantino's resignation or a leadership challenge in March, is moving from politics to the courtroom. It's worth noting that Infantino is simultaneously facing a separate criminal complaint from his former boss Michel Platini, who accuses him of orchestrating the case that cost the Frenchman the FIFA presidency back in 2015.
