Yesterday, we reported that ahead of the 2024 Copa América final, a decision was made to alter the rules. Instead of the usual 15-minute halftime, teams will now rest for 25 minutes. This change is due to a performance by Colombian star Shakira.
During the pre-match press conference, Colombia's head coach Néstor Lorenzo criticized this decision. He believes that the rules should remain consistent and be followed as per the regulations.
"I think everything should be like any other game. According to the regulations, the break should be 15 minutes," he said, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Lorenzo recalled that some teams and coaches had been fined throughout the tournament for returning to the field late after halftime. Lorenzo himself, as well as Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni and Peru's head coach Ricardo Gareca, faced such penalties. The Argentine coach was even suspended for the match against Peru and the post-match press conference.
"When we came out in the 16th minute, they sanctioned us, and now it turns out there will be a show, and we’ll have to come out in the 20th or 25th minute."
Lorenzo also expressed concern about how the extended break might affect the players.
"It could really impact our players' physical condition, as they might get too cold."
