AFCON 2025: Mohamed Amine Amoura Apologizes to Congolese Fans After Controversial Celebration
Algerian striker Mohamed Amine Amoura has apologized to Congolese fans following a controversial celebration after Algeria’s 1-0 win over DR Congo in the AFCON 2025 Round of 16.
The Desert Warriors secured a place in the quarterfinals with a dramatic 1-0 win over Congo, thanks to Adel Boulbina’s decisive goal in the second period of extra time.
Amoura faced backlash after mocking a fan who imitated Congolese revolutionary Patrice Lumumba. On Instagram, he expressed regret, insisting there was no malicious intent behind his actions.
The VfL Wolfsburg forward stated:
The match against Congo was a big game, incredibly intense, with a lot of tension and emotion on the pitch.
I want to make one thing clear: at that moment, I had no idea what the person or the symbol present in the stands represented. I just wanted to tease, in a lighthearted spirit, with no ill intentions or desire to provoke anyone.
I respect Congo and their team. Honestly, I wish them the best and hope they qualify for the World Cup.
If my behavior was misunderstood, I sincerely regret it, as it was never my intention.
I'm staying focused on the pitch and on representing my country with pride.
Tahia Djazair!!!
