The 1-1 draw between Brazil and Morocco in the opening round of the 2026 World Cup instantly became one for the history books for several reasons.
According to MisterChip, the Brazilian national team has extended its remarkable unbeaten streak in World Cup openers. The Seleção have now gone 21 consecutive World Cup tournaments without losing their first match—a run that began after the 1934 World Cup, when Brazil fell 1-3 to Spain. Since then, Brazil have never started a World Cup campaign with a defeat, racking up 17 wins and four draws in their opening fixtures.
At the same time, Morocco also entered the record books, though with a less enviable achievement. The North African side failed to win its opening World Cup match for the seventh straight time. Thanks to the draw with Brazil, Morocco now stands alongside Bulgaria, sharing the dubious record for most World Cup appearances without a debut win. Both teams now jointly hold the mark for the most tournaments played without a victory in their opening game.
