UEFA and CONCACAF have kicked off talks to create a joint Nations League, a move that could pose a serious challenge to FIFA’s dominance. According to The Guardian, the new tournament could launch as early as 2028, bringing together all 96 national teams from Europe, North and Central America, as well as the Caribbean region.

The competition is expected to be held every two years, following a structure similar to the current UEFA and CONCACAF Nations Leagues. Teams would be split into several divisions, with the strongest sides battling it out for the trophy in a Final Four format.

Matches are planned for the existing international windows in September, October, and November, with playoffs in March and the finals in June. Organizers also aim to hold games within geographic blocks to minimize travel distances.

This new tournament could deliver significant revenue to smaller federations thanks to shared commercial income. Mexico, in particular, has shown keen interest, having previously considered switching from CONCACAF to CONMEBOL.

Amid these developments, both UEFA and CONCACAF are taking a stand against Gianni Infantino, pushing for his departure from the FIFA presidency. The Guardian reports that the confederations are planning to nominate a joint candidate for the March 2027 election.
