The Spanish national team has suffered a significant personnel blow on the eve of the World Cup.
Details: According to Cope, Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea has sustained an injury to the long adductor muscle in his left hip. Medical examinations revealed that the nature of the injury will not allow the player to recover in time for the start of the tournament, automatically ruling him out of La Roja’s squad.
For the 24-year-old, who was having a stellar season in La Liga, this verdict comes as a real blow. Barrenetxea was considered by Luis de la Fuente as a key rotation player, capable of boosting the attack with his pace and dribbling. Now, the coaching staff will have to urgently search for a replacement.
The full list of players heading to the World Cup is expected to be announced later.
It's worth noting that Barrenetxea has already made his debut for the Spanish national team in a March match against Egypt.
Reminder: Brazil forward João Pedro may also miss the World Cup if Neymar is called up.
