FIFA has reportedly hit an astonishing financial milestone, but the record-breaking figures have come at a controversial cost for football supporters.

Details: According to The Times, FIFA generated approximately $5 billion from ticket sales and hospitality packages at the 2026 World Cup. This is more than five times the $929 million collected during the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The figure has not yet been officially confirmed by FIFA.

The extraordinary revenue surge was largely driven by controversial ticket pricing. FIFA repeatedly adjusted prices according to demand and availability, with supporters facing substantial increases during different sales phases. Although the governing body describes its approach as variable pricing, critics have condemned it as dynamic pricing.

Another major factor was the tournament's expanded format. With 48 participating nations and 104 matches instead of the previous 64, FIFA had significantly more opportunities to sell tickets and premium hospitality packages.

The organization also benefited from its official resale platform, reportedly collecting a combined 30% commission on transactions. Meanwhile, supporters' groups fiercely criticized the soaring costs of attending football's biggest competition.

It is worth noting that FIFA had originally budgeted around $3.3 billion in ticketing and hospitality revenue. The reported $5 billion figure substantially exceeds that projection, although audited financial results are still pending. FIFA also introduced a limited $60 ticket category for supporters of qualified national teams.
