World Cup 2038 bombshell! France wants to bring football's biggest tournament back home
France is dreaming of hosting another World Cup almost four decades after its unforgettable triumph on home soil.
Details: According to Ouest-France, French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo has confirmed that the country is seriously considering a bid to host a future FIFA World Cup, potentially as early as 2038. However, France is unlikely to pursue the ambitious project alone, with a joint European bid emerging as a possible solution.
Diallo explained that the expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 participating nations has significantly increased the demands placed on host countries. In his view, organizing such a massive tournament would require at least 16 major stadiums, making international cooperation particularly important.
Germany has emerged as a potential partner, with Diallo highlighting the excellent relationship between the French and German football federations. The possibility of involving a third country has also been discussed, although no official hosting agreement or candidacy has been announced.
The project remains at an exploratory stage, and its future will depend on several factors, including FIFA's bidding requirements and political developments in France. The 2038 edition is therefore a potential target rather than a confirmed destination for the tournament.
It's worth noting that France previously hosted the men's World Cup in 1938 and 1998, winning the latter tournament with a 3-0 victory over Brazil in the final. The country also staged the Women's World Cup in 2019. Meanwhile, FIFA has already awarded the 2030 men's tournament to Morocco, Portugal and Spain, while Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 edition.
