“Cardoso must go!” Furious Sundowns fans demand coach’s resignation after CAF Super Cup failure
The defeat to USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup turned into an unpleasant scene for Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso. After the final whistle, the Portuguese manager was making his way to the team bus when supporters greeted him in an extremely hostile manner.
Footage published online shows fans seeing the manager off with chants of “Cardoso must go!”. In doing so, the South African club’s supporters openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the result and called for the coach’s resignation.
Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a 1-3 defeat despite playing at home in Pretoria and hoping to claim another international trophy. USM Alger scored three goals and denied the hosts any chance of rescuing the match.
For Cardoso, the reaction was yet another sign of growing pressure from the fans. It remains unknown whether the incident will affect the Portuguese coach’s future at the helm of the team. However, following such a painful defeat, his position has clearly become no more secure.
It should be noted that Mamelodi Sundowns had previously suffered a shock failure in the CAF Champions League and failed to reach the group stage.
