Fans were left bitterly disappointed after learning they wouldn’t get to see Messi in action.
Details: According to The Athletic, the Vancouver Whitecaps and MLS are required to pay compensation to charitable organizations and certain fans after artificially inflating ticket prices ahead of their match against Inter Miami, due to the anticipated presence of Lionel Messi.
Reports say that in May 2024, the Vancouver Whitecaps hosted Inter Miami at home, and with the expectation that Lionel Messi would take the pitch, Vancouver fans snapped up all tickets at inflated prices within minutes—only to be let down.

Inter Miami’s then-head coach announced that Messi would not be able to play in the match, sparking outrage among fans who had paid a premium for tickets but never got what they hoped for.
Ultimately, some fans filed complaints seeking compensation for emotional and financial damages. The court sided with the fans, ordering Vancouver to pay 347 million US dollars to three different sports organizations: KidSport British Columbia, Canada SCORES, and BGC South Coast BC.
Additionally, Vancouver is required to pay 1,500 euros to each fan who officially filed a complaint.
The Vancouver club has already stated that they are doing everything possible to resolve the situation amicably with the fans.
