Jens Lehmann delivered a scathing assessment of Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s exit from the 2026 World Cup.
Details: The German team crashed out of the tournament at the Round of 16, losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout. Both regulation and extra time ended 1-1, but Germany fell short from the spot — 3-4.

After the match, Lehmann pointed out that Nagelsmann himself never played football at a high level. According to the former goalkeeper, this could be a problem when managing top-level players in the national team.
“It comes down to the coach’s background. For example, if you look at the coaches today, Nagelsmann has never played football. I don’t even know the names of the assistants on his coaching staff,” Lehmann said.
He also reminded that Germany was previously coached by Franz Beckenbauer, Rudi Völler, Jürgen Klinsmann, and Berti Vogts. Lehmann believes Nagelsmann is the first coach in 30–40 years without significant playing experience.
The ex-goalkeeper emphasized that details are especially important in the national team. Lehmann insists that top players need concrete tactical advice, not just general instructions.
Reminder: Nagelsmann took charge of the German national team in autumn 2023. At Euro 2024, the team crashed out in the quarterfinals, and at the 2026 World Cup, they were eliminated after just their first knockout match.
